'Jewish terrorist' suspected of 4 murders

Haim Pearlman committed four homicides, three attempted murders, police say during court hearing. Suspect's lawyer plans to appeal prohibition of meeting with client, insists he is being falsely accused

The Petah Tikva Magistrates' Court on Thursday extended the remand of Haim Pearlman, arrested Tuesday on suspicions that he committed a series of homicides and attempted homicides against Palestinians in Jerusalem in the 1990s.

During a hearing held in Pearlman's absence, the police ascribed to him no less than seven homicides and attempted murders. On Wednesday, the case only included three homicides.

The police claimed during the hearing that the murders allegedly committed by Pearlman took place in 1997, 1998, and 2004. The hearing was held without Pearlman's lawyer, Attorney Adi Keidar, who has yet to be allowed to meet with his client since his arrest. Keidar said that he plans to submit an appeal to challenge the ban on meeting with Pearlman.

'Edge of an abyss'
Keidar denied the allegation leveled against Pearlman and said that he is being kept in detainment merely as a means to pressure him. Keidar also claimed that the allegations are based only on indirect conversations.

"We deny the allegations. They are making a false case against him. I am being updated via media outlets and other sources. It turns out that this is a complex case of the Shin Bet handling Pearlman," Keidar said.

"They brought him to the edge of an abyss so that he would do what they asked of him. I don't want to imagine what would have happened had all the things they asked of him – including the assassination of Raed Salah – had been undertaken. He was being used (by Shin Bet) because he needed money," added Keidar.

The police asked the court to extend Pearlman's remand by 15 days, but the court only granted a seven-day extension.

Channel 1 reported Wednesday that Pearlman was a Shin Bet agent in 2000. The Shin Bet denied this.

"They fabricated the whole thing, just like in the 'Truman Show'. They are trying to frame me. That's what I think," the far rightist told Channel 2.

Kach activist Haim Pearlman, who was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion that he was the "serial stabber," insisted on Wednesday that he was framed by the Shin Bet security service because he refused to serve as its informant.

Bigger Than Beckham? Henry Arrives

Thierry Henry’s arrival as a player with the Red Bulls stands a far better chance of stimulating soccer in the United States than the David Beckham acquisition.
Henry is a more gifted player than Beckham. He has more to give on the field and is less celebrity conscious. He is coming to challenge himself as a player rather than to boost his, his wife’s or his agents’ celebrity earnings.

His career in Europe is over, and Henry is unlikely to think he can play home and away, as Beckham has tried to do by flying back and forth in an effort to prolong his England career.

Henry’s news conference in New Jersey to announce the signing is scheduled for Thursday, and he is expected to make his team debut on July 22 against Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.

But he may not give a better reason for making the move than he already has. “Some people might think I am going to go there for vacation,” he said Wednesday. “Well, I do actually go there for vacation — but it won’t be for vacation this time. I’m a competitor and I don’t like to lose.”

He turns 33 in August, roughly the same age as Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer and Carlos Alberto when they came to the Cosmos in the 1970s. Their motives, a new and lucrative challenge in the twilight of great careers, were similar to his, and it is right and reasonable to compare Henry to those stars more than the many who have passed through American soccer since.

Henry has won it all in Europe. For France. For Arsenal. For Barcelona. He has been a World Cup winner, a European champion, a top scorer and an exceptional performer.

He is a proud man. He knows the United States and the role that sports play in its culture because he has visited often to support his close friend Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs.

There is always an element of self-delusion when great stars face the downward slope. As Katharine Hepburn put it, performing beyond a certain age is “selling one’s deteriorating self.”

A deteriorating Henry possibly has more to give than a deteriorating, and distracted, Beckham. It is true that Henry at his best, five years ago, was a human equivalent to the cheetah: fast, feline and driven by hunger.

His countryman William Gallas, an opponent with Chelsea, once said: “You have to watch Henry like you watch milk on a stove. Look away for a split second and you’re in trouble.”

That was because there was guile and an instinct for opportunity from almost any angle, any distance to the goal. Henry got his fast genes from his father’s side. His uncle was a 400-meter champ in the Antilles. His father, Antoine, came from Guadeloupe, and his mother from Martinique.

But it was on the mean streets of a Paris suburb, Les Ulis, that Thierry Henry’s combination of speed, trickery and touch was spotted.

He would often play in his father’s soccer shoes because he could not afford to buy his own, but A.S. Monaco, a club in the south of France, offered him a contract the day its scout set eyes on him, when Thierry was 13.

He was sent to the French national soccer academy at Clairefontaine, but it was his pairing with Monaco’s first-team coach, Arsène Wenger, that brought out his skills. As a mentor — and as a coach whose teams have always played attacking, cultured soccer almost to the detriment of winning trophies — Wenger saw Henry as the perfect player.

Their eight seasons together at Arsenal exceeded anything in the club’s illustrious history. The team went an entire season without losing, dominated the Premier League and won titles. And Henry, despite being known as a moody player, seemed to find scoring easy.

There were exquisite strikes with either foot. There were maneuvers that seemed uncanny and almost balletic in movement and balance. There were standing ovations in the great stadiums, like Milan’s San Siro, when he scored with such nonchalance, such class, against Inter Milan, the home team.

And there was an astounding accumulation of goals. He scored more goals, and had more assists, than any Arsenal player — 226 goals and 92 assists in 369 matches. He broke the record of France’s greatest player, Michel Platini, by scoring 51 times in 123 games for the national team.

He received the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest decoration, when he was 20 and a member of the French squad that won the 1998 World Cup.

Yes, there has been decline in Henry’s pace, sometimes in his motivation, and in his personal life after his marriage to an English model, Nicole Merry, dissolved. He was for a time disoriented by playing in Barcelona while his daughter, Tea, was in England. There are many causes, including Unicef, AIDS relief and fighting racism in soccer, that have demanded his time, and some would say that have complicated his focus.

He was considered to be the ninth-most-marketable soccer player (Beckham was No. 1). A Gillette advertising campaign bracketed Henry with Roger Federer and Tiger Woods.

His halo has slipped. His handball led to France’s qualification for the World Cup, at Ireland’s expense, in November. And at the tournament itself, Henry was given little playing time for a French team that went out in disgrace after the players rebelled against team management.

It became a political issue. The French sports minister, Roselyne Bachelot, said some of the players were “immature gang leaders in command of scared kids.”

Henry said: “They should stop talking about gang leaders. I came from the Paris suburbs. I know what a gang leader is, and there aren’t any in the team.”

His image as Mr. Cool disappeared in that statement. He is probably history in France now, and is seeking a new stage. Knowing him, he would not intentionally risk his reputation unless he believed deep down that he could rise to the challenge in the United States.

Congress Passes Financial Regulation Bill

WASHINGTON — Congress on Thursday gave final approval to an overhaul of the nation’s financial regulatory system, intended to address the causes of the 2008 economic crisis and rewrite the rules for a more complex — and mistrustful — era on Wall Street.
The vote by the Senate was 60 to 39, with three Republicans from the Northeast joining with the Democrats in voting to advance the legislation.

One Democrat, Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, voted against the bill, saying it was still not strong enough to prevent future crises. And the seat held by Senator Robert C. Byrd, Democrat of West Virginia, who died last month, is vacant.

"We want to make sure this disaster never happens again," the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, said after the vote. "The solution has to start here."

Mr. Reid added, "No more bailouts. No bank is too big to fail."

The House approved the bill in June by a vote of 237 to 192, and there, too, only three Republicans voted in favor.

The legislation now heads to President Obama for his signature, and the White House said it was already planning a ceremony next week to mark the completion of another landmark piece of legislation, following the enactment of the historic health care bill in March and last year’s economic stimulus program.

Mr. Obama’s press secretary, Robert Gibbs, said that the regulatory overhaul was an achievement that Democrats would promote throughout the fall election season. “We cannot continue to operate using the same rules that got us into this recession,” Mr. Gibbs said. “I think this will be a vote Democrats will talk about through November.”

But like those other big laws that Mr. Obama can claim as victories, the passage of a new regulatory regime hardly guarantees that it will be effective. And, despite lingering public anger at Wall Street, the political implications for the midterm elections are highly uncertain. Most Republicans voted resoundingly, and confidently, against the bill.

Even Senator Christopher J. Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut and chairman of the banking committee who was a main author of the bill, acknowledged that Americans will probably not know for years — perhaps not until the next financial crisis strikes — if the response by Congress this year was sufficient, or falls short despite the best intentions.

“We won’t know the full results of what we have done until the very institutions we have created, the regulations we have suggested and provided for are actually tested,” Mr. Dodd said in a floor speech. “We can’t legislate wisdom or passion. We can’t legislate competency. All we can do is create the structures and hope that good people will be appointed who will attract other good people — people who will make careers and listen and see to it that never again do we go through what we have gone through.”

Passage of the bill would herald the end of more than a generation in which the prevailing posture of Washington toward the financial industry was largely one of hands-off admiration, evidenced by steady deregulation. While the measure does not fully restore the toughest restrictions imposed after the Great Depression, it is a clear turning point, highlighting a new distrust of Wall Street, fear of the increasing complexity of technology-driven markets, and renewed reliance on government to protect the little guy.

The bill would create a council of high-level federal officials, led by the Treasury secretary, to try to detect, and perhaps prevent, systemic dangers to the financial system, and it would give the government new authority to seize and shut down failing financial institutions, by liquidating assets and forcing shareholders and creditors to take losses.

It would create a powerful consumer financial protection bureau, to be housed in the Federal Reserve, and widely expand the regulatory authority of the central bank. It would widen the purview of the Securities and Exchange Commission to strengthen regulation of hedge funds, other private equity firms, and credit rating agencies.
